Messerschmitt Bf 109E‑4/B WNr 3726 of 6.(S)/LG 2, flown by Erhardt Pankratz, was shot down over Sussex by RAF No. 603 Squadron on 5 October 1940. A similar captured Messerschmitt was later displayed at Preston’s Flag Market around 1943 as part of wartime savings campaigns. The aircraft stood near the brick air‑raid shelters built along the market’s northern edge, drawing public attention during the height of the war.
