Sergeant Cyril Frederick Babbage of No. 602 Squadron bailed out of Spitfire X4188 off Bognor Regis on 26 August 1940 after downing a Bf 109, later rescued by local fishermen and taken to hospital. Returning to duty, he fought Me 110s on 11 September, shooting one down despite damage to Spitfire X4269. He damaged a Do 17 on the 15th, destroyed a He 111 on the 26th, and on the 27th downed a Ju 88 and probably a Bf 109. On 12 October he shared in destroying another Ju 88 before crash‑landing X4541 at Iford Farm. He received the DFM on 25 October 1940.
