Princess Elizabeth of England makes her broadcast debut on October 22nd 1940.  The Princess, aged just fourteen, made her first radio broadcast on the BBC’s Children’s Hour. Speaking from Windsor Castle during the Blitz, she addressed children who had been evacuated overseas, offering reassurance and solidarity. Her calm, composed message expressed shared sacrifice and hope, reflecting the royal family’s determination to remain in Britain. The broadcast was widely praised and marked Elizabeth’s first public act of service during the war.

23rd October

This smiling girl, dirtied but apparently not injured, was assisted across a London street on the 23rd October 1940, after she was rescued from the debris of a building damaged by a bomb attack in a German daylight raid.

24th October

A British armorer attachs a wing mounted bomb prior to the Berlin raid on October 24th 1940.  On the night of 24 October 1940, RAF Bomber Command carried out another raid on Berlin, continuing Britain’s retaliatory bombing campaign against the German capital. Although limited in scale and accuracy, the attack had important symbolic value, demonstrating that Berlin was not beyond reach despite Hermann Göring’s earlier assurances. Bombs fell on industrial and residential areas, causing modest damage but a significant psychological impact, reinforcing British defiance during the height of the Blitz.
